The pure aluminium layer acts as the main barrier: it is effectively opaque to light, and it resists oxygen and moisture better than ordinary plastic film. To reduce the chance of the aluminium cracking during pouch making and filling, lamination requires careful control of adhesive weight and curing conditions, together with a flexible plastic layer. Since the inner layer comes into direct contact with water, its material must balance heat-seal strength with hygiene requirements.
